چکیده

We present a light scattering measurement of the correlation length for a series of critical solutions of polystyrene in methylcyclohexane with different molecular weights. Our results show that the correlation length j;Nne, where N is the polymerization index and e5(T2Tc)/Tc is the reduced temperature. The N exponent zn is found to be 0.1860.02, which is contrary to most earlier direct experimental results but in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions by de Gennes and Stepanow. © 1999 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-9606~99!51142-2#

Bridging length scales in colloidal liquids and interfaces from near-critical divergence to single particles

Boiling and condensation are among the best recognized phase transitions of condensed matter. Approaching the critical point, a liquid becomes indistinguishable from its vapour, the interfacial thickness diverges and the system is dominated by long-wavelength density fluctuations. Long wavelength usually means hundreds of particle diameters, but here we consider the limits of this assumption, u...

Concentration dependence of the interfacial tension for aqueous two-phase polymer solutions of dextran and polyethylene glycol.

We studied the interfacial tension between coexisting phases of aqueous solutions of dextran and polyethylene glycol. First, we characterized the phase diagram of the system and located the binodal. Second, the tie lines between the coexisting phases were determined using a method that only requires measuring the density of the coexisting phases. The interfacial tension was then measured by a s...

Turbidity of critical solutions of polymethylmethacrylate in 3-octanone

We have measured the turbidity for a series of solutions of polymethylmethacrylate in 3-octanone ~PMMA/3-OCT! with various polymer molecular weights. The obtained correlation length ~j! and the osmotic compressibility ~x! show power law dependence on both the reduced temperature e 5(T2Tc)/Tc and the degree of polymerization N of the polymer chains, i.e., j;N e and x;Ne, with the associated scal...

Semidilute Athermal Polymer Solutions near a Hard Wall

We have studied semidilute athermal polymer solutions near a hard wall extensively with Monte Carlo simulations. The details of the segment density profiles near the wall are shown for the first time. We have shown that in the semidilute regime the segment density near a wall has the form: d z ) = $(le-(z/e)m), where m is the exponent at small distance and and 6 are the bulk segment density and...
